Opens Feb. 15, 2012 with Bourbon Tasting by Expert Mike Veach
“Bottoms Up: J. C. Barnett Whiskey Jug Exhibit” will open February 15, 2012 at the Oldham County History Center. This collection features the 469 whiskey jug collection by the late J. Chilton Barnett who was an avid collector and antique dealer from Pewee Valley. Mr. Barnett left the $80,000 collection to the Oldham County History Center and the collection features jugs from small towns in Kentucky as well as jugs from larger cities such as Louisville and Lexington. Some of the smaller towns that are represented include Bowling Green, Brandenburg, Covington, Elizabethtown, Frankfort, Harrodsburg, Lawrenceburg, Lebanon, Lexington, Maysville, Owensboro, Newport, Grassy, Paducah and Winchester. The ceramic stoneware jugs were used up to the Prohibition Era.
Most of the jugs were used to hold whiskey, although some held such products as vinegar, pickles, honey, and arsenic. Several cases are dedicated to miniature jugs that were used mainly as advertising pieces. names of small distilleries or of small businesses, such as drugstores or general stores that were known as “barrel houses.” These businesses bought whiskey by the barrel and sold them to individuals using the jugs as returnable for refills.
There will be a special opening for history center members and their guests
on Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. with expert jug authority and Filson Club historian, Mike Veach. Mike is the state’s authority on whiskey jugs, their history and utility in the 19th and early 20th century. Registration is required: $20 members/$25 non-members.
