Al Gorman’s River Sculptures

IN CONJUNCTION WITH OLDHAM COUNTY: LIFE AT THE RIVER’S EDGE
Louisville artist Albertus Gorman uses river debris to create various characters and creatures that puts a humorous and imaginative spin on the trash that floats down the might Ohio River. Much of the debris is collected around the Falls of the Ohio. Underneath the humor and imagination, Gorman shows how people disregard the Ohio Rivers as a living, natural ecosystem that tirelessly supports life in spite of continued abuse.
Gorman is loaning 10 of his river sculptures for display in conjunction with Oldham County: Life at the River’s Edge exhibit. According to Gorman the sculptures “span the seven years I've been doing this at the Falls. The materials I used range from Styrofoam, wood, plastic, bone, mussel shells, coal, aluminum and more. The titles for the sculptures are:
1) Adams Sculpture
2) Devonian Devi
3) Island Man
4) Running Figure on Wheel
5) The Inhaler....this piece sits and I need to make a base for it.
6) Walking Napoleon
7) Big-Head Ned
8) Cat Man
9) Pelvis has an Heir
10) Styro-Guru

The sculptures will be on display with the public multimedia art contest that used the theme: Oldham County: Life at the River’s Edge. In addition there will be a living stream touch table of mussels, fossils and small organisms from the Ohio River. Visitors will also be able to try their own hand at creating “Trash Sculptures” from recyclables that have been collected on the Ohio River banks.
