“Play it Again, “John”!”

History of Player Pianos by John Ball at the Oldham County History Center

Join us for this delightful program on Saturday, May 15 at Noon, as John Ball “tickles” the keys with the Oldham County History Center’s player piano in the Rob Morris Chapel Educational Building. John studied classical piano with two teachers; the late Xie Dixon Hopkins, and the late Alice Coffin Sprague. He also also studied pipe organ with Dan McKinnley and Larry Wickersham and voice with Ms. Lee Hervey.

John is a Pipe Organ Tech and is employed by Miller Pipe Organ Co, in Louisville, KY. He has always been interested in history and is a member of the Oldham County History Center’s Antique Iron with a special interest in gas engine antiques. John is the Organist and Choir Director at LaGrange Presbyterian Church. He is a member of the Organ Historical Society, Henry Co Historical Society, and American Institute of Organ builders.

John has always loved theplayer pianos: “Player Pianos and their music have always been something that fascinated me, I love the sound, and the musical style, I always wanted to be able to play myself like them, however, finding out that most of the music were actually played by 2 people (4 hands) or played over by the same person. It is a sound that gets into your blood.”

He will be giving a program using the 1921 Marshall-Wendell player piano, foot pumping it and giving history, and explaining the workings of the instrument. This piano was a gift to the Oldham County History Center from history center member, Lowell Griffin. A vast span of music will be played and in different styles, from old to new.

John and his wife, Pamela Boyer Ball reside in LaGrange, both love antiques and have a collection of antique Kerosene lamps that number more than 150. They have 3 pianos in their home and 2 are players.

Reservations only: Saturday, May 15, at Noon, $15 members, $18 non-members, includes a boxed lunch. Call 502-222-0826
