Primary Docs: The Museum Collection An Exhibit that Celebrates Kentucky Archives Month

The Oldham County History Center celebrates Kentucky Archives Month with its new exhibit “Primary Docs: The Museum Collection”. The exhibit features unique documents, letters and artifacts of Oldham County, many of which have never been on display. Items include original land deeds signed by Patrick Henry as well as a hand copy of a deed from the 1700s with Thomas Jefferson’s signature. There is a section on deeds and early court records, sheriff summons, and bounty contracts for runaway slaves. Items include those that have been featured in the history center’s weekly Courier- Journal column, World Beneath My Feet, such as the Dr. and Mrs. Stanton Bryan letters (circa mid-1800s) and letters from the Civil War (the Union letters of Amos Mount and the Confederate letters of David Weller). There is a special section on Annie Fellow Johnston with the original Little Colonel portfolio that was created for the Little Colonel movie proposal. The Mallory Taylor Family Portraits (circa 1830s) that were displayed in the corridor of the Mallory Taylor Hospital are another feature of the exhibit.

The purpose of the Kentucky Archives Month is to celebrate the importance of archival and historical records to our nation, state and our lives. Archives hold a rich documentary legacy which shapes our understanding of the past and our assessment of the future. The Oldham County History Center archives contain important letters, documents, records, genealogy and artifacts that are maintained for the benefit of the people of Oldham County. Children get to experience an “archivists” job with some special exercises on transcription and calligraphy translations. The Kentucky Archives Month coincides with the American Archives Month.

The Exhibit will run through March 1, 2010.
