“The Avenging Conscience”: The First Great American Horror Film:
A D. W. Griffith Movie now playing at the Oldham County History Center in honor of DDL’s The Spirits of LaGrange Ghost Tours
In honor of the annual Spirits of LaGrange Ghost tours conducted now through November, 7, 2009, the Oldham County History Center will be showing “The Avenging Conscience” by D. W. Griffith. Dubbed “America’s first great horror film”, Griffith interwove an Edgar Allen Poe tragedy laden narrative of a young man (Henry B. Walthall) who yearns to escape form his overbearing, one-eyed uncle (Spottiswoode Aitken). After the nephew murders the ogre, he and his lover (Blanche Sweet) are wracked by guilt and tormented by nightmares, ghosts, and demonic entities that drive them to horrifying extremes. Also featured is a Griffith 7 minute short film on Edgar Allen Poe. Produced in 1914 the film lasts 84 minutes and is special re-master produced by KINO Video. The film is shown in the Samuel Peyton Head Family Museum of the Oldham County History Center.
David Wark Griffith (1875-1948), known as the “Father of Modern Film”, is an Oldham County native and is buried in the Mt. Tabor cemetery in Centerfield. The Oldham County History Center has an archive of Griffith materials. The Spirits of LaGrange Ghost Tours are produced by Discover Downtown LaGrange and feature walking tours on Friday and Saturday evenings. All profits from the ghost tours benefit the preservation of LaGrange’s historic district.
