PRIMARY DOCS: The Museum Collection
an Exhibit at the Oldham County History Center
opens Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009
In the today’s world of emails, blogs and personal websites, primary documents may become a thing of the past in the near future. Primary documents are materials that are closest to the person, information, period or idea, that is to say “the original source”. These items may include letters, diaries, original oils, photographs, court documents, etc. Many museums are displaying more copies of items rather than the originals, yet, when people were surveyed (Ohio Historical Society, 2009) they expressed strong opinions about being able to see the “original” artifacts and sources.
The Oldham County History Center will feature some of its rare documents and artifacts, some of which have never been displayed. Visitors will see the “Stray Book” that lists cows and horses that strayed from their owners and were claimed by others (circa 1828). The first murder trial court record “Lucy, Woman of Color”, describes how Lucy, a slave, poisoned her mistress, Elizabeth Smith. There will be some rare whiskey jugs on display, including the famous “pig jugs” as well as jugs from saloons that were in LaGrange, Eminence and Shelbyville. Original oils, City of LaGrange Council Minutes from the early 1800s, civil war letters and diaries, slave papers, courthouse cases, and photographs are just a few of the examples that visitors can see.
Special events and lectures are being planned for late Fall to compliment the exhibit.
