Oldham County History Center Dinner/Lectures at the Westport General Store
Celebrate the Oldham County Historical Society’s 50 Year Anniversary with The River Series. Set against the backdrop of historic the river town, Westport, Ky. these series of dinner/lectures glimpse into the past traditions of communications, entertainment and libations.
August 6, 2009, Thursday. Nick Baute of Hound Dog Press demonstrates the art form of 19th Century Press and its importance for communication in the past. A resident of Oldham County, Nick’s shop is set-up in the Mellowood Arts Center in Louisville. Nick will talk about the history of press and have demonstrations on hand. The history center will provide some historic documents from its collections that were produced by the hand press techniques.
Sept. 16, 2009, Wednesday. An Oldham County resident, Bill Samuels of Maker’s Mark Bourbon will share family history and traditions that have surrounded the bourbon industry. The history center will display some of the unique and rare whiskey jugs from the Chilton Barnett Collection.
Oct. 15, 2009, Thursday. James Claypool is a Ky. Humanities Council speaker and will speak about “Kentucky Blue: The Story of Bluegrass Music”. He will play some of the classic tunes and look at the careers of pioneers like the Monroes as well as such current greats as Ricky Skaggs and Rhonda Vincent.
All lectures start at 6 p.m. with cocktails, the lecture and then followed by a dinner prepared by Westport General Store. The cost is $18 for history center members and $20 for non-members, call 502-222-0826 for reservations.
