Oldham County History Center
“Paint a Picket and Photography Contest Featured”
The Smithsonian Exhibit “Between Fences” opens this Saturday, April 25 at Noon at the Oldham County History Center with an ice cream social. The exhibit is a collaborative effort between the Smithsonian Institute and the Federation of State Humanities Councils and brought to Kentucky by the Kentucky Humanities Council. The Oldham County History Center is featuring two special exhibits, the Paint-a- Picket Project and the Fence Photography Contest as a part of Between Fences.
Paint-A-Picket features fence pickets that the families, groups and schools have painted with the theme “What Does History Mean to Me?” Over 300 pickets have been painted and will be displayed on the Oldham County History Center lawn during the Between Fences Exhibit. The theme was selected for the celebration of the 50 Year Anniversary of the Oldham County History Center. Pickets were painted by children, families, individuals, organizations and businesses. Popular historic themes included: Barack Obama, Apollo 13, 9/11, Elvis, Statue of Liberty, Historic places in Oldham County, family genealogy, etc. The Paint-A-Picket Project was sponsored by the Oldham County History Center and Oldham County Conservation District.
Over 70 photographs were submitted for the Between Fences photograph contest. Winners were selected from 5 age categories. The only restriction was that the fences be photographed in Oldham County. The most popular entries involved fences with ice from the February ice storm. Other entries included fences with horses, chickens, children, cats, flowers and beautiful pastoral scenes. Winners will be announced and cash prizes given on the exhibit opening day.
