Kentucky Derby Festival Quilt on Display at the History Center
December 7-14, 2007
The Kentucky Derby Festival Quilt will be on display at the Oldham County History Center when Light-Up LaGrange kicks-off its downtown festival on Friday, December 8. This official Kentucky Derby Festival Quilt has Oldham County roots. The quilt project was spearheaded by Marjie Applegate of LaGrange who was assisted by fellow seamstresses Jean Riggs, Mildred Hundley, Linda Holman, Maurine Pollard and Ruth Mathus. The quilt is fashioned from swatches of material cut from current and retired Kentucky Derby Festival uniform jackets. Marjie sketched her quilt design on graph paper, with rows of colorful squares meeting at each corner, where she added a fleur de lis, the symbol of Metro Louisville. It serves as a background for a large Pegasus icon cut from ultra suede, with buttons from one of the oldest jackets added to its eye. The entire piece is edged with gold roping. The quilt will be on permanent display in the lobby of the Kentucky Derby Festival office after it’s showing at the history center.
The Kentucky Derby Festival Quilt will be on display at the Oldham County History Center through Saturday, December 15, 2007.
