The Conrad Bennett Tool Collection is now on exhibit at the Oldham County History Center. The collection contain 694 tools, most of which date from the 1800s. These tools were handmade and carefully designed, exhibiting a special craft and specific use for the quality and time spent in trades and professions of the past. These tools were meant for hand use and were extensions of the human body. They were crafted from natural materials such as wood, leather, bone and metals such as iron and steel.
Local resident, Conrad Bennett, left an extensive part of his collection to the history center before the history center was built.
Most of this collection has never been on display. There are metal and wooden shoe molds, farm implements, planes and axes, blacksmith tools, knives, grass blades, scythes, forks, wedges and froes, handmade nails, gouges and chisels, transportation tools used for carriages and wagons, Model T's and trains and tools from the household including early appliances and kitchen gadgets.
In addition there will be outdoor displays of hand-hewn logs, grinding wheels and a small, hand crafted log cabin. There will be hands-on activities to highlight how simple machines work throughout the summer during special events, and some models on display of prototype engines from the late 19th and early 20th century from a private collection.
