Juneteenth Day: Celebrating Oldham County's
African American Culture
Saturday, June 16, 2007, 4-6 p.m.

The Oldham County History Center sponsors the 4 th annual Juneteenth Celebration as a part of cultural heritage celebrations. This year's theme is The African American Spiritual as Moral Authority. Guest speaker Dr. Bruce Tyler, University of Louisville will address the importance of the African American spiritual on the civil rights movement, particularly honoring such as individuals as Marian Anderson who is remembered for her conscience-grabbing concert at the Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday, 1939 after she was denied the use of Constitution Hall, an arena that, from 1935 to 1952, opened its doors to white artists only. Ms. Anderson had performances at Ft. Knox and Memorial Auditorium. The Annual 2007 Elijah Marrs Award will be presented to Dr. Kevin Wayne Cosby for changing the course of history in his community, helping those in need. The Oldham County Choir and Pleasant View Baptist Church Choir will entertain with their musical renditions of various selected African American spirituals and an interpretive dance will be presented by local talent, Brandi Hill. Refreshments will follow the program. Admission is free and activities will take place in the education annex, Rob Morris Chapel.
