Archaeology Institute for High School Students
June 19 - June 22, 2007

The Oldham County History Center will be offering a 4 day archaeology institute for high school students sponsored by the Carl Clore Foundation.   Under the supervision of Northern Kentucky University archaeologist  and consultant Jeannine Krinebrink, students will work 2 days at the Gatewood Plantation Site in Bedford and then we will go to the Civil War Site in northern Kentucky where Krinebrink has conducted research.  The Gatewood Plantation Site is a site sponsored by the Oldham County History Center.  This is the site where abolitionist Henry Bibb was a slave before his escape.  Bibb’s narratives can be found online at  http://docsouth.unc.edu/neh/bibb/menu.html.  Information about the Henry Bibb Project can be found online at the Oldham County History Center website http://oldhamcountyhistoricalsociety.org.

Achaeologist Krinebrink,  has led many archaeological investigations, some of which include the reconstruction and deconstruction of the pre-Civil War slave pen that is now the centerpiece of the Freedom Center in Cincinnati.  She oversees the activities at the Gatewood Plantation Site.  This is a very active and physical institute where students will get hands-on experience in archaeology while contributing to the knowledge of archaeology.  Students will spend an overnight camping trip at the Cincinnati site.

Cost is $50 per students, limited enrollment, students must be 14 years or older to participate.  Scholarships are available.  Call the history center for more information at 502-222-0826
