Archaeology Investigation at the Gatewood Site
The Oldham County History Center and Northern Kentucky University will be conducting a archaeology investigation at the Gatewood Plantation in Trimble County on Saturday, October 7 from 10 am until 3 pm. The Gatewood Plantation was a pre-Civil war site where African American slave, Henry Bibb lived before he escaped to Canada and became the first African American editor of a newspaper. The archaeology investigations began in the Summer of 2005 with a grant from the Kentucky Heritage Council. Jeannine Krinebrink, associate professor at Northern Kentucky University is the lead archaeologist for these continuing investigations. Krinebrink has worked on several major projects including the deconstruction of the slave pen in Mason County, now on display at the Freedom Museum in Cincinnati.
This investigation is for people who would like hands on field experience in archaeology. Participants will be working under the supervision of Krinebrink and her students. The investigation is limited to 15 people. The activity is not recommended for those under age 16. Pre-registration is required by calling 502-222-0826. |
