The Henry Bibb History Project
Dinner/Lecture, May 17 at Westport General Store
Archaeologist Jeannine Krinebrink from Northern Kentucky University and local historian Diane Coon will discuss slave and abolitionist Henry Bibb and the efforts to establish a National Park Service Trail in his honor. The Henry Bibb History Project was initiated last summer by the Oldham County History Center through a grant from the Kentucky Heritage Council. The grant sponsored an archaeological assessment of the Gatewood Plantation outside of Bedford in Trimble County. The Gatewood Plantation was the last site where Bibb was a slave before he escaped and eventually settled in Canada where he became the first black editor of a newspaper. Members of local historical societies as well as Trimble County High School students participated in the archaeology project. Jeannine Krinebrink supervised the archeology assessment and Diane Coon conducted records surveys with volunteers to establish connections with the Bibb, Gatewood and Sibley families, described in the Bibb narratives. The program begins at 6 p.m. for reservations call the Oldham County History Center: 502-222-0826. $15 for members/ $18 for non-members, includes dinner.
