"The Land of the Free": Early African American Communities

Author Carrider Jones has been directing a project with the Filson Club to research the early African American communities from Harrod's Creek, Prospect, Berrytown, Griffeytown and Newburg areas. She has collected oral histories and photographs from the area, providing new information about historic landmarks, community life, buildings and roads, many which have disappeared or have been forgotten. Research for the project has been supported from the Kentucky Humanities Council. This presentation will include a slide program and lecture. Ms. Jones lives in Louisville , serves on the Henry Bibb History Project for the Oldham County History Center , and is also a playwright and poet.
he dinner/lecture will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16, 2005, at the Westport General Store, Westport , Ky. Participants will also be treated to a bourbon tasting and receive a poster that features jugs from the J.
