The
Oldham County Historical Society is continuing with its Lecture Series
July 20th. Six times a year, at varies locations in Oldham County, members
of the Historical Society get together to with a guest speaker who lectures
on local or regional history. July’s speaker is Dr. Bruce Tyler,
a history professor at the University of Louisville. He has prepared a
slide show as well as a lecture titled, “Marguerite Davis and the
43rd Aviation Squadron at Bowman Field (Louisville) during WWII: Showing
up for the fight for Democracy.” The lecture will be held at the
Brownsboro Eatery with the program beginning at 6 p.m. The cost for members
of the Historical Society is $15 and for non-members $18, which includes
The Chef’s Special of one entrée, two sides and a drink as
well as admission to the speaker and slide show.
Dr. Bruce Tyler is a graduate
of the University of California where he received his Ph.D. in 1983. He
has published three books including “Images of African American
Life in Louisville,” “From Harlem to Hollywood: The Struggle
For Racial and Cultural Diversity,” and “Black Leaders of
Los Angeles: Celes King III.” Dr. Tyler is currently a professor
in the department of history at the University of Louisville.
The topic of Dr. Tyler’s
lecture is on Marguerite Davis who was the recreation director for Black
troops at Bowman Field during World War II. She was also the U.S.O. show
director. The slide show will feature numerous pictures from Marguerite
Davis’ estate. The photographs were taken during her time while
working at Louisville’s Bowman Field. The photos will also be included
in a forthcoming book by Dr. Tyler titled, “Louisville and WWII:
The Role of Bowman Field in the War.”
