"Celebrating our Cultural Heritage: Oldham County's German Americans" will open on Saturday, May 14 featuring a Mayday festival for children that emphasizes German culture. A  A Maybaum or Maypole will be erected and children will dance around the Maypole with Bavarian music by Hans Sanford. The "Monkey Lady" puppeteer will be on hand for programs. Children will create their own "Schultute", a traditional cone that is filled with treats and given to children on the opening of school days. Children will also decorate Teddy Bear cupcakes and make puppets. Exhibits have been created by students from the South Oldham High School German Club that feature the differences and similarities between Germany and the United States. In addition, there are displays on Oldham County's German families that brought their culture and special contributions to our area. An exhibit on German toys with special emphasis on the Steiff Toy Company that specializes in teddy bears and other stuffed animals will be included.

Each summer the Oldham County History Center celebrates a particular culture that settled in Oldham County. Some of the German families came from the Germana Colonies in Virginia while others migrated here during the mid-1800s because of civil war in Germany. Special German programs will be featured throughout the summer that emphasizes the unique aspects of the culture.
