This year we began celebrating Oldham County 's Celebrities with our Dairy Queen's Famous People's Birthday Party Day. On April 21 we celebrate Buddy Pepper!
Who was Buddy Pepper?
Buddy Pepper (1922-1992) whose real name was Jack Starkey, was a LaGrange native. He was an actor in radio, vaudeville and films and later became a Hollywood composer and accompanist for Judy Garland and Marlene Dietrich. One of his most popular songs was "Vaya Con Dios" has been recorded over 500 times. He contributed songs for such movies as "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", "Top Man", "This is the Life", and "The Hucksters". His film title songs included "Pillow Talk" for the Rock Hudson-Doris Day picture and "Portrait in Black," which starred Lana Turner and Anthony Quinn.
In films he appeared in "Seventeen" with Jackie Cooper; "The Reluctant Dragon" with Robert Benchley' "Golden Hoofs" and "Small Town Deb" with Jane Withers; and "Men of Boystown" with Spencer Tracy. Buddy's cousins locally are Martha Potts Long and Hazel Potts Trummer.
