Press Release Oldham County History Center SEPTEMBER: September 11, Saturday, 11 am.: Volunteer Committee Meeting for Hermitage Farm Exhibit. If you want to help work on the committee for planning events, exhibit materials and educational programs for our Spring 2005 Hermitage Farm exhibit then come to this meeting!! We will meet in the archives building. September 11, Saturday, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m . A Taste of LaGrange in conjunction with the opening of the Campbell Art Exhibit that features works of local artists. Your $20 ticket entitles you to a progressive dinner at participating restaurants in the LaGrange Historic District. Proceeds benefit the History Center . Tickets may be purchased at the Oldham County Historical Society, Karen's Book Barn or Panache. September 17, Friday , 9 am to 2 pm. Civil War Re-actment by students from Christian Academy on History Center Campus. Also features demonstrations by local craftsman. Open to the Public. (Sponsored by the Christian Academy but open to other school groups) September 23, Thursday, 7:30 p.m: Volunteer Committee Meeting for Celebrating Oldham County's German Heritage , Summer Exhibit 2005. If you want to help work on the committee for planning events, exhibit materials and educational programs for our Summer 2005 German Heritage Exhibit Please Come!!! September 25, Saturday, 10:30 a.m. : African American Committee Meeting : Focus is conducting interviews for preserving history and traditions. Ms. Carridder Jones, local author on black history , will lead a discussion about how to conduct interviews. OCTOBER: October 9, Saturday 10 am to 4 p.m. Cost: $10 A Treasure Hunt ! Participate in a treasure hunt of the historic district of LaGrange by looking for secret puzzle pieces as you learn about Oldham County 's history!! When your puzzle is complete take it back to the history center for your reward! A Treasure Hunt ! activity begins in conjunction with the opening of our exhibit Mapping My Sense of Place. A Treasure Hunt! activity will be available each day throughout the Mapping My Sense of Place exhibit (through Nov. 9). October 9 to November 9 : Museum hours. Mapping My Sense of Place , co-sponsored with the Oldham County Conservation District. Create your own river, make your own map, create a special place! Donated by the Oldham County Conservation District, you will be introduced to our new Riverlab - a hands-on sand table where you can create your own streams and rivers. On display will be all types of maps of our area including aerials from the 1940s to recent , 19 th Century fire maps, and many more. Special films will be shown daily in our 1880s Presbyterian Annex, including NASA's "Liftoff to Learning: Geography from Space" that takes the viewer on a rapid tour of Earth's surface as seen from outer space. Visitors will be encouraged to "make their own maps" of their community and locate the special features of Oldham County that make it unique! October 9, 2004: 9 am to 3 pm For Teachers: Geography and History on Horseback: An Educator's Workshop . LIMITED 12 Educators (teachers, scout leaders, etc.) In this workshop you will go on a horseback trail ride along "the ridge country" and learn about Oldham County 's unique geographic features. This workshop ties in with our Mapping My Sense of Place exhibit and educators will participate in mapping activities as well as receive classroom materials that are specific for teaching about our region. LUNCH is included. COST: $30. We will begin at the Oldham County History Center and carpool to Lil' Big Horse Trails. Wear long pants and tennis shoes. October 15, 2004: 7 p.m. The Annual Gala of the Oldham County Historical Society at the Olmsted. This annual fundraiser includes a wonderful dinner with the reception at 7 p.m. and dinner at 8:00 p.m. Carl Klingenfus (1915-1999) will receive the J. Chilton Barnett Champion of Oldham County History in addition there will be a silent and live auction. Reservations are required. Cost: $100 per person. October 16, 2004: Noon : Trees and Trails! See Oldham County on horseback during the height of Fall colors. Meet at Lil' Big Horse Trail for this activity. You will be led on a trail ride and experience fall colors at their peak! This horse ride is adapted for beginners and novice- LIMITED 12 people, Ages 7 and over- children must be accompanied by adults. Cost: $25 Advanced Registration required. October 23, 2004: 10 am to 2 p.m . Meet re-enactor Gary Gosser as he portrays life of a woodsmen from Kentucky in the 1700s. Gary will set-up camp on history center property and do various demonstrations that depicts living conditions from that time period. NOVEMBER: November 10: 6 p.m . Dinner and Lecture by local artist Gail Williamson at IRISH ROVER TOO followed by opening of Gail's art exhibit "Of Faith and Devotion" at the History Center . $15 members/$18 non-members includes selected items from the menu. November 10 through January 1: "Art Of Faith and Devotion" this exhibit features the artwork by local native, Gail Williamson. Gail has spent her years perfecting her style by incorporating hand work and technology into an artform. In many instances she uses antique quilts and combines embroidery stitching to create powerful religious themes. She uses various old and new techniques of sewing to make her pieces. She has traveled to Europe as a part of her studies and often uses Madonna images. November 10 through January 1 : We will display a special Christmas Tree in our bay window that is decorated by Christmas in Kentucky , one of LaGrange's local shops on 203 E. Washington Street . Shop owner Linda Foster, is making a special creation for our seasonal display. November 20: "Children's Textile Workshop" conducted by fabric artist Gail Williamson. Gail will have children compare the various textiles from past to present using special collections from the history center archives. Each participant will construct their own "fabric dolls" to take home. 10:30 am to Noon: $5 members/$7 non-members Limit of 12, recommended ages 9 to 12 years. Registration suggested DECEMBER: December 3, 2004: "Light-up LaGrange" Children can create their own "Holiday Cards" using templates from our old fashioned postcard collection. December 4, 2004: 11 am to 1 pm "Quilting and Embroidery Techniques" If you have an interest in quilting, embroidery or any type of sewing craft this workshop is for you. Gail will share her secrets about ways that she has created the special art pieces on display in "Art of Faith and Devotion". She has unique suggestions for "recycling" family heirlooms, quilts, etc. that make attractive displays. $10 members/$13 non-members includes box lunch. Reservations required December 11, 2004: "Ivy and Holly Day" Create your own wreaths and swags like "the old days". The History Center furnishes the local greens and ribbons and you make "your creation". Demonstrations on ways to enhance your holiday house. Special music, treats and additional crafts for children to make their "own" decorations. $10 members/$13 non-members, all day. December 18, 2004: "A Victorian Tea Party for Children" From 11 am till 3 pm we will be serving special tea and treats for children. Children will make their party favors and participate in parlor games and activities from the Victorian era. Reservations are required. Recommended ages: 8 to 12 years. $5 members/$7 non-members.
