Bibb Project- Archaeology Dig- August 27, 2005 |
Volunteers under the director of Archaeologist Jeannine Kreinbrink from Northern Kentucky University , helped to sift and look for artifacts around the Gatewood Plantation Site. This was the first organized site excavation and is funded through the Kentucky Heritage Council. The Gatewood Plantation was an important part of Henry Bibb's narratives. William Gatewood was the last person that owned Henry Bibb. After escaping, Henry Bibb tried several times to negotiate the freedom of his daughter, Mary Frances and his wife Malinda with William Gatewood. Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful and eventually left to begin a new life in Canada . Many artifacts were found that were early 1800s such as nails, pottery and porcelain shards, toys, keys, etc.
